BITTER WEEKEND: It will be a very cold weekend with sunshine that won’t be doing a whole lot of warming across the area. Highs today will struggle to get into the 20s. Some areas in the northern part of the state may stay in the upper teens for highs. Along with a north to northwesterly wind at 10-20mph, this will produce wind chills at or below zero for most of the day. Anyone attending the Iowa, Iowa State or UNI games today will need to bundle up as you head out. UNI of course will be playing their game inside the UNI-Dome where it will be a much warmer 72° inside. Tonight as the winds die down and with clear skies, the readings will take a tumble down into the single digits above AND below zero. Sunday will see somewhat similar readings but maybe a smidge warmer with less wind with readings in the 20s statewide to lower 30s in the far south and southwestern counties.
COLD TURKEYS: Readings will moderate somewhat on Monday as winds turn westerly and southwesterly, which should boost readings back into the 30s for most of the state but another shot of colder air will sweep in late in the day. This may kick off a few flurries or light snow showers in the northeastern counties of the state, but this shouldn’t amount to a whole lot at this point. Highs will drop back into the 20s to lower 30s through at least Thanksgiving. Anyone travelling on Wednesday will need to note that some rainy and perhaps wintry weather will be over the east coast from Boston on down to Atlanta and part of the Deep South that may affect travel in those areas. Black Friday will see readings back into the 30s across the area with partly to mostly sunny skies around for the shoppers that will be heading out.
DECEMBER: More cold shots and more snow on the way according to this run of the GFS. It isn’t as active as the run yesterday but there are still some decent snow chances around the 3rd into the 4th with a push of colder air. Otherwise the main story looks to be colder than average temperatures across the area for the first week of the month but given what the model showed yesterday, we’re not too confident with regards to precipitation chances at this time.
