COLD BLAST: It’s going to feel a lot like winter for a few days as cold high pressure comes down from Canada. Some early flurries in the eastern counties will quickly clear out with some sunshine statewide by the afternoon. Highs will be in the upper 20s through the 30s across the area. Tonight and again Saturday readings will tumble. Tonight we’ll see lows in the single digits north and teens south. Saturday night will see lows down into the single digits in all but the southern and southwestern counties of the state. Some cooler locales may dip below zero by Sunday morning. Anyone heading to Ames or Iowa City for college Football on Saturday will need to dress warm as readings will be stuck in the 20s during the day with a cold northerly breeze keeping wind chills down near 0 most of the day.

COLD TURKEY: Temperatures will moderate briefly on Monday as readings will get back into the 30s and possibly lower 40s across the state before another cold blast out of the northwest comes in Tuesday that will drop readings back into the 20s to lower 30s for highs through Thanksgiving. It will be partly to mostly sunny throughout as well.

LOOKING THROUGH THE CRYSTAL SNOWBALL: A little snow activity on Black Friday to worry about, but nothing too significant at this time although we’ll keep watch on it. Heading into December, the GFS model show a significant storm blowing through the area around the 3rd through the 5th of December. This could bring a plethora of precipitation from rain to snow and possibly a mix of the two. This is still more than 10 days out and things are likely to change, but if this does pan out, it will likely be the first real nasty winter storm of the year. Another low will race behind this one but will be farther to the southeast as cold air dumps into the country once more. One thing is for certain, this run shows that the first week of December will be cold and white across the area.
