WARM DAYS WANING: The last few warm days of the year looking to be on way out. Today and tomorrow will see highs in the 70s to lower 80s across the state with plenty of sunshine to go around. There will be an increase in cloudiness on Friday ahead of a system that will sweep a cold front through late Friday into early on Saturday. With most of the energy with this system passing well to our northwest, there will only be a slight chance of seeing any rain activity with the front. Some areas could get upwards of a quarter inch of rain, while others may get by with little or nothing. Cooler air will arrive late Saturday and Sunday with highs dropping back into the 60s to near 70 which is near the seasonal average for the middle of October.
RAINY START: The start of the new work week looks to be a wet and somewhat cool one across the state as another storm system moves in from the west. There will be an increase in shower activity beginning early on Monday in the western counties sweeping east throughout the day. This will keep the temperatures down into the 50s for a good deal of the day. There could be an isolated rumble of thunder but the better chances of seeing that will be down in Missouri. The rainy skies will continue into Tuesday as the system moves slowly off to the east. There will be some backwash clouds and light rain showers that look to continue into Tuesday night and even early on Wednesday in the eastern and northeastern counties of the state. Readings will be a touch warmer with some lower to middle 60s possible except in areas where rain may still be falling. Colder air will move in after that with perhaps a few light showers in northeast Iowa next Thursday some of which could have some graupel as well.
EXTENDED PERIOD: Cool weather looks to stick around for most of the extended period with perhaps a shower or two around the 20th with another Canadian High Pressure dropping down behind it. We could see our first frosts of the season during this period if the winds become calm during the night. By this point at least half the state should have had a frost or freeze at this time, so this would not be big news. What could be big news is a very nasty storm at the end of the period that could bring arctic air to the state toward the end of the month. It may also bring us our first snows of the year, but it’s WAY too early to discuss that possibility when it’s still more than two weeks out and may be gone on the very next run.
