SLOWLY WARMING: The shortened work week will start out quite seasonal across the state with highs in the 70s and lower 80s slowly warming through the week through the 80s before a new surge of cooler air arrives for the upcoming weekend. It will remain mainly sunny and dry this week outside the far NW where a few isolated showers and thunderstorms will be possible Wednesday, but those chances look remote at this time.

RAIN CHANCES: The cold front separating a cool Canadian High Pressure to the northeast from the warm air to our southwest will clash over the state this weekend with a chance of some showers and thunderstorms. The GFS on this run shows the front coming into the state from the north on Saturday, stalling and then retreating back northward as a warm front late on Sunday. If this were to happen, southern Iowa may not get any rain from this system either. Many areas in SE Iowa for example haven’t had a drop of rain in over a month and this system if it were to pull this, would be a slap in the face to those desperately seeking rain from the heavens only to get dust and sunshine in their eyes. Luckily another cold front looks to move in Monday into Tuesday next week with a much better chance of showers and storms statewide. So there is hope for those bone dry in parts of the state.

COOL PERIOD: After the storm moves by toward the beginning of next week the GFS shows mainly dry weather once again across the area with near or slightly below seasonal level temperatures. No big systems nearby, perhaps some tropical mischief in the Gulf but that could be gone on the next run, so nothing much to speak of in the extended period at this time.
