HEAT WAVE WANING: The end of the heat wave is in sight but we have another day of it ahead for the state with readings in the upper 80s to upper 90s. Some areas may hit the century mark if the conditions are right. The GFS has been somewhat consistent about having some isolated shower and thunderstorm activity later tonight across the northeastern and eastern counties of the state. The chances are 20% or less but nevertheless the chance is there. Saturday will be warm again but not as warm as today with highs in the 80s to mid 90s. Tailgating at Kinnick and Jack Trice will be very warm (in comparison to the games in November where it will be much colder) with sunshine at both Ames and Iowa City. Saturday night into Sunday a cold front will move into the state with a better chance of showers and thunderstorms at that time. There is a possibility that some of the storms could be strong but that will be dependent on when the storms arrive. The rest of the Labor Day Weekend looks wonderful especially Labor Day itself where readings will be in the upper 70s to mid 80s across the state with lower humidity.

NEXT WEEK: Cooler, drier air returns to the state as High Pressure settles in. This will bring temperatures down into the 70s and 80s warming back into the 80s statewide by the middle of the week as winds look to turn back around to the south and southwest. The ridge does look to move back into the state but it will be centered to our southwest thus keeping the real hot weather away from us for once. We’ll see if that changes in future model runs.

IDES OF SEPTEMBER: The GFS is fairly rambunctious with rainfall for the area in the extended period including the 8th through the 11th and around the 14th. I’ll believe that when I see it given the amount of dryness we’ve had over the last month plus. If this was to take place we could be in for an active month of September, but take that with a grain of salt.
