TALKIN’ ABOUT A HEAT WAVE: At least a week of very July like weather across the state and region with a ridge overhead, little if any cloud cover and temperatures well into the 90s, perhaps even approaching or touching the century mark in a few locations. Heat Indices will be another story with them ranging between 100-105° most afternoons. This is expected to last starting today through the end of the week and perhaps into the coming Labor Day Weekend, but we’ll have to wait and see on that. The GFS does show some shower and storm chances fairly close by with a frontal system that could sag into the northeastern counties of the state late in the week. This could be the trigger for some rainfall up there but it’ll be hit and miss as most of the rain has been over the last month. Most places will stay dry this week with the heat entrenched throughout the period. Heat Advisories are in effect in NW and NE Iowa and are likely to be extended further if not expanded dependent on what takes place over the next few days.
EXTENDING TO SEPTEMBER: GFS continues with the breaking of the ridge around the Labor Day Weekend with a ridge reforming well to our west and putting us in a northwesterly flow. This would cool temperatures down to near seasonal levels (in the 70s and lower 80s) and bring bouts of showers and thunderstorms. However this is still in the extended period and may change. Nevertheless, the heat wave that begins today may last at least through next weekend with perhaps some chances of rain thereafter.
