Criticism like this goes with the territory. You develop a thick skin pretty quick. That said, I think if a station demonstrates a responsible and consistent approach to severe weather, people will understand. The same people who criticize an interruption when they aren’t affected will be the first to turn to you when they are under the gun. They’ll do that because they know you will be there. It’s not an accident that stations cover weather this way. Like anything on tv, it doesn’t air if there isn’t an audience for it. While weather coverage may frustrate some, the overwhelming majority of people look to you for that. It is probably the single biggest service that station provide the public. And that’s a big part of each of us maintaining our FCC licenses. We try to be cognizant of the programming that is on the air when we cut-in. But at the end of the day, you’ll likely hear very few apologies for coverage of this sort.
