HOT DAY, RAIN COMING: Another hot day for most of the state today with some places seeing possibly the hottest temperatures of the year. Highs will be in the 90s for most of the state with some areas getting into the upper 90s, especially in the southern and eastern counties of the state. There is a cold front that will be moving into the state today that will bring a threat of showers and thunderstorms. some of the storms could be strong to possibly severe but the main severe weather threat looks to miss the state just to the east over Illinois, Wisconsin into lower Michigan.

MORE COMFY: The weekend will be noticeably more pleasant with readings back to seasonal levels in the 80s with lower humidity, but the rain chances don’t go away as another system will make a run at the state late Saturday night into Sunday. The rain chances look to continue into the beginning of the week as well with Monday seeing a decent crack at some rain through early Tuesday before another push of cooler weather moves in from the north. Rainfall through this time could be significant, especially for areas that could get repeated storms throughout the time period. An inch or more is certainly possible with the QPF chart showing as much as 2 inches. Any heavy rain on the fairly dry soil may lead to some flash flooding due to runoff, so be aware of that if the threat arises.

EXTENDING ALONG: Another storm Thursday will reinforce the cooler air across the region with the following weekend looking great. The best days of RAGBRAI next week look to be Tuesday and Wednesday and again Friday and Saturday. Thereafter the GFS shows the northwesterly flow becoming entrenched across the area which would keep the hot weather at bay off to our west, the chances of rain every few days and some sunshine intermixed as well. This looks to continue now even into August as the ridge doesn’t look to budge from the four corners region, but we’ve seen where it made a run at us in other runs, so we’re not confident that the hot summery weather is over for us quite yet.
