ONE MORE DAY: Another day of hot and humid weather today with some showers and thunderstorms as well. Some severe weather is possible with the Storm Prediction Center having a slight risk of severe weather outlooked across the entire state. The main threats look to be from large hail and damaging straight line winds, although an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out. Heavy rain is possible as well but it shouldn’t lead to much if any flooding of any sort. Highs today will be in the upper 80s to mid 90s with heat indices approaching and exceeding 100 especially in SW Iowa where a heat advisory is in effect today.
COOLING DOWN: Temperatures will drop down into the lower to middle 80s with lower humidity Wednesday through about Friday with plenty of sunshine around before a ridge begins to move over the state for the weekend into the following week. There could be an isolated shower or storm in the northern counties of the state during the weekend but it will be few and far between.
EXTENDED PERIOD: The ridge breaks down and retrogrades westward at the beginning of the extended period. The pattern looks to become more zonal with typical July temperatures with some chances of showers and thunderstorms here and there. The Tropics look to become more active albeit the GFS is known for showing many “tropical” systems in the extended period, but we have to be weary that even a tropical system far from the area can impact the weather here to an extent so we’ll watch for any trends on that.
