Mother Nature isn’t Done Yet, More Severe Weather on the Way

Storm Prediction Center May 20 2013 0600 UTC Day 1 Convective OutlookWell, mother nature, as well all know it, has her ways. 55 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and 9 Tornado Warnings yesterday, and lots of heavy rain saturating the soil. You would think she would have enough, but, of course, she doesn’t.

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has posted a elevated risk for severe weather again today. Another day of unstable airmasses is on the way as a trough as daytime heating, combined with rotates across the state while a warm front sets up shop farther North easily destabilizes the air. Storms should begin developing sometime in the afternoon before storms really begin going, especially across Southeast Iowa, later in the evening.

The setup for today will be quite similar to yesterday, with large hail, towards the size of ping pong balls at timesdamaging winds, and a few tornadoes all possible with the supercells that develop. Flash Flooding is also a definite concern with how much rain we have received over the last couple of days. Wind shear is very supportive of tornadoes and damaging winds, and that combined with an unstable atmosphere create a very nasty situation for Iowa.

We will likely be starting live coverage in the early afternoon. Stay tuned to the Iowa Weather Blog, IWN Facebook Page and Twitter page for the latest information.
