ACTIVE WEEK: A storm system will be making its present known for the next several days across the state and the Midwest with numerous rounds of showers and thunderstorms. A small brief window of partly sunny skies today will give way to more showers and thunderstorms by afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked a small area of slight risk for severe weather for today and tonight across far southwestern Iowa including Council Bluffs, Red Oak, Clarinda and Shenandoah. Main threats today into tonight would be from large hail and damaging striaght line winds. Readings today will be in the 60s to lower 70s. The low pressure center will slowly track across Missouri Tuesday into Wednesday, keeping the state mainly out of the main bout of severe weather, however SPC does have the southern counties of the state under a slight risk of severe weather Tuesday mainly along and south of IA 92. The main threats would be from large hail and damaging straight line winds. The tornado threat is likely going to be confined to our south over MO, OK down into TX. Moderate to heavy rain will certainly be a possibility with amounts through Thursday ranging between 1-3″+. The GFS though has been hinting at the possibility of a changeover to a rain snow mix especially by late Wednesday night into Thursday. Whereas that’s a possibility as temperatures will be down into the 40s for highs and lows in the 20s and 30s, any accumulation is likely to be light and most likely will melt on contact due to the warm ground and plentiful rainfall we’ll receive prior to the cold airs arrival. This is still a fluid situation that may change so stay tuned.
MORE ACTIVITY: The cold air doesn’t last too long as readings rebound quickly back into the 50s to near 60 by next week with another system in the offing by late Saturday into Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible once again at that time. It’s too early to determine any severe weather possibilities at this time. The GFS continues to show the chance of showers and storms all the way to the 20th with another storm taking aim at the state on the 23rd.
