Iowa Forecast Discussion March 23rd 2013

NO VIDEOS UNTIL MONDAY

SNOWIER SOUTH: Clouds will be on the increase today as a storm system will move to our south. Snow will likely break out by this evening into the overnight hours across the southern counties of the state. This will overspread much of the state with some light snow, with moderate snow at times across the southern tier of counties. Snowfall amounts are likely to be up to 2″ across areas along and north of US Hwy 30. 2-4″ between US Hwy 30 and IA Hwy 92, with 4-7″ south of IA 92. The NAM and GFS has a pretty good agreement that the heaviest snow will fall in a 40-50 mile wide band from about Harrisonville MO to Columbia MO to Bowling Green MO to Springfield IL. Anyone heading down to St Louis or Kansas City should be aware of that today and Sunday. The snow is likely going to compact as it falls, so you may only see a few inches of snow depth with the storm. Any subtle track northward will have to be watched which would bring the heavy snow band into southern and southeastern Iowa. Winter Storm Watches remain in effect (will likely change by the time many of you read this discussion).

STILL COLD: May still see some lingering flurries or snow showers Monday as the storm moves off to the east quickly. Northerly winds will bring cold air back in as if it has never left. Readings in the 30s will be commonplace Monday into Tuesday with lows down into the teens and lower 20s. We may see even lower temperatures than that if the skies can clear and the winds die down. A weak disturbance Thursday may bring a few flurries or sprinkles but it’s also going to bring some warmer weather that will last into the following weekend.

APRIL FOOLS SNOW?: In the Winter that never ends department, a storm may move into the area around April 1st that will bring even more cold air down. Most of the precipitation will be confined to the southeastern states where some severe weather is possible while we get in on some snow action. This has been seen on the models for quite some time and we still have more than a week to watch it. This would not be at all surprising given what we’ve been through over the last few weeks and months.

FARTHER OUT: Another storm around the 6th and 7th of April could bring some rain to the state as temperatures warm once again. There is no signs of any cold air following this system but this far out it’s likely to change several times of the next few days.
