SLOPPY WEEKEND: Rain will be falling across the state today, some of it could be in the form of freezing rain early on before temperatures warm above the freezing mark during the morning hours. Some thunder is also possible as well mainly across the southern counties of the state. As the cold air filters in behind the storm as it lifts out to the northeast tonight into Sunday, the rain will change to some snow over the northwestern counties where some accumulations are possible. A wintry mix is possible in the central counties during the nighttime hours with rain continuing over the east. Sunday will see the precipitation change to all snow over the entire state but most of the moisture as mentioned before will have moved off to the east before the cold air arrives. The exception to that as mentioned earlier is in northwestern Iowa where a band of 2-5″ of snow is possible from near Sioux City through the Iowa Lakes Region into Southern Minnesota. Little if any accumulation will be possible south of an Omaha to Ames to PDC Line although some models differ on that at this time. Any model changes could bring significant differences, stay tuned.
CALMER WEEK: Temperatures will drop back into the 30s for highs to begin the new work week and will stay there for most of the week. A weak disturbance on Wednesday and again Friday into next Saturday may kick off a few sprinkles or flurries that shouldn’t amount to any issues or accumulations.
STORM FRONT: GFS is showing a fairly active pattern continuing as mentioned over the last few days. One storm in particular from the 19th through the 22nd could bring a plethora of issues with rain, snow, wintry mix and perhaps a chance of thunderstorm intermixed in as well. Temperatures look to remain near seasonal levels with a few days dropping below with passages of storm systems and a few days above. Don’t see any big swings at this time but anything can happen during this transition into Springtime.
