Mother Nature must still not be impressed with the snowstorms she gave us last month. So, she gave us another one.

An Upper Low will make its way across the state Monday night into Tuesday with heavy snow that will begin falling late tonight into tomorrow morning. An “Alberta Clipper” type system coming from the North to Northwest, this system should have a bigger punch with it than it usually does. A half inch to one and a half inches is common in these systems, however this one has the ingredients to make totals higher into the 4-6″ range, with locally higher amounts of up to 8″ possible.

With these amounts easily into advisory and warning criteria, the National Weather Service offices across the state have issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of the state, with the exception of Northeast Iowa, who are under a Winter Storm Warning. These alerts will go into effect late Sunday night and remain until Tuesday afternoon through evening.

Models have come into better agreement today with the system. The typical models, the GFS, NAM, and SREF, have all aligned up better when it comes to the track of it. They currently have the Upper Low in-line to hitting Northern Iowa Monday into Tuesday before tracking Southeast and essentially merging with another Low Pressure system in the Arkansas/Louisiana region, which should take the system away from our area and push it Northeastward.

Now here is the good news. Models have also been hinting to a potential “blocking” pattern within a few weeks which should bring temperatures and finally enter us into spring, melt our snow and bringing some relief to the drought, and lay the groundwork for some possible April severe weather chances that, we personally, have been longing for since last April. Now that is a way’s away, so we will continue to bring you updates on this potential final snowstorm of the season.
