Iowa Forecast Discussion 7/7/2012

LAST DAY: The heat wave is looking to come to an end today, but not in what we hoped was some widespread rainfall. It’s looking more and more as if many areas if not all may not even get a drop of rain today as the cold front moves through. Given the rest of the weekend and into next week looks dry as well. This could be devastating to crops and other farm fields. Temperatures today will be well into the 90s, perhaps touching 100 again in far SE Iowa. However temperatures will slide back to seasonal levels next week with 80s for highs and lows in the lower to middle 60s.

WHEN’S RAIN COMING: the 06z GFS doesn’t show any “widespread” rain until Sunday JULY 15TH! and with that 8 days out that’s still not great. The GFS does show a more active pattern after that time period, but again we’ve seen this before and seen it go away as we’ve come closer to the time. Drought conditions will likely worsen over the next few weeks, possibly into severe if not extreme drought by the end of the month if no appreciable rainfall comes soon.
