…HEAT RECORDS FOR DES MOINES IN THE LAST TWO DAYS…
THE LAST TWO DAYS…JUNE 27 AND 28…HAVE SEEN EXCEPTIONAL WARMTH AT
DES MOINES ESPECIALLY FOR THIS EARLY IN THE SUMMER. THE HIGH
TEMPERATURE OF 101 DEGREES ON THE 27TH WAS THE FIRST TRIPLE-DIGIT
HEAT REGISTERED SINCE 2006…AND THE FIRST IN JUNE SINCE 1988. THIS
IS ONLY THE 12TH YEAR ON RECORD…WITH RECORDS GOING BACK TO
1879…IN WHICH THE 100 DEGREE MARK HAS BEEN REACHED BEFORE THE END
OF JUNE.
THE WARMTH OF JUNE 27 CONTINUED THROUGH THE NIGHT INTO JUNE 28 WITH
A LOW TEMPERATURE OF ONLY 81 DEGREES ON THE LATTER DATE. NOT ONLY
DOES THIS BREAK THE DAILY RECORD…PREVIOUSLY 78 DEGREES SET IN
1931…BUT IT IS ALSO ONLY THE SECOND TIME IN THE LAST 75 YEARS THAT
DES MOINES HAS RECORDED A DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE OF 81 DEGREES OR
HIGHER…THE OTHER OCCASION BEING JULY 12 1966.
THE DAILY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE ON JUNE 28 WAS 89 DEGREES…MAKING IT
THE WARMEST MAY OR JUNE DAY AT DES MOINES SINCE JUNE 21 1988. THE
28TH ALSO MARKED THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1988 THAT WE HAVE SEEN
CONSECUTIVE DAYS IN JUNE ON WHICH THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 97 DEGREES
OR HIGHER.
