UP AND DOWN: It’ll be down for a few days with regards to the temperatures. A storm system will be departing the state later today after bringing some snow to the state, amounts ranging from a trace to a few inches. Cold air follows in the wake of this system with temperatures for highs in the teens and 20s through Thursday. Nighttime lows will be in the single digits, with a few locales possibly getting below zero both Wednesday and Thursday morning. Readings begin to rebound toward the weekend after another system passes by Thursday into Friday with more snow. 40s will be possible especially by Sunday across the state with some 50s in western Iowa where there is no snow on the ground.

BIG STORM?: A storm on Monday into Tuesday of next week will have to be looked at closely as this is possibly the first big storm of the winter season. The model run shows a low pressure moving over the state Monday night into Tuesday from near Topeka Monday evening to Rhinelander WI Tuesday evening. Monday will be warm across the state with rain likely across the area. Given the dynamics, there could be a few rumbles of thunder with that. Cold air filters in Tuesday with the rain changing to snow from west to east. Accumulations could be significant given the amount of moisture that will be entrained into the system. It’s WAY too early to determine actual amounts or where the heaviest snowfall will be, but stay tuned as systems from the southwest like this one, typically give us the heaviest snowfalls.
