EF1 Tornado Confirmed at New Sharon

…FINAL DAMAGE SURVEY RESULTS FOR NEW SHARON TORNADO…

THE STORM SURVEY INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN COMPLETED IN COOPERATION
WITH THE NEW SHARON FIRE DEPARTMENT AND MAHASKA COUNTY EMERGENCY
MANAGEMENT.

…TORNADO DAMAGE CONFIRMED ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF NEW SHARON…

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DAMAGE ASSESSMENT HAS CONFIRMED THAT A
SMALL PORTION OF THE DAMAGE IN NEW SHARON ON JUNE 20 2011 WAS CAUSED
BY A SMALL TORNADO. THIS DAMAGE WAS EMBEDDED IN A NARROW DIFFUSE
PATH OF STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE…MOSTLY TO TREES…THAT OCCURRED
ON THE SOUTH HALF OF NEW SHARON AND 2 MILES TO THE WEST AND EAST.

* INJURIES: NONE KNOWN

* FATALITIES: NONE KNOWN

* DISCUSSION/DAMAGE: NUMEROUS TREES LIMBS AND A FEW LARGE TREES DOWN
IN NEW SHARON AND NEARBY…DUE TO STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE. THE
WORST DAMAGE FROM A BRIEF EMBEDDED TORNADO DESTROYED THE SOUTH ONE
QUARTER OF A RENTAL STORAGE BUILDING…AND BLEW A CAR STORED IN THE
BUILDING INTO A DITCH. SHEET METAL AND WOOD DEBRIS FROM THE STORAGE
BUILDING WAS CARRIED UP TO ONE QUARTER MILE ACROSS A CEMETERY AND
PART OF THE HIGH SCHOOL TRACK. AT LEAST 40 GRAVE STONES WERE TOPPLED
BY THE WIND CARRIED DEBRIS.
