Ice storm beginning to Unfold

At this hour much of the state remains under an Ice Storm Warning with northern and eastern Iowa under a Winter Weather Advisory. The primary concern remains to be the accrual of ice on streets, sidewalks, trees, and power lines as most of this will fall as freezing rain. Far northwest Iowa may see some minor snow accumulations. Fortunately winds are expected to remain light at 5-10 MPH which should help lessen the chance for any power outages, however the possibility cannot be ruled out.

With freezing rain now falling across much of the state road conditions are beginning to deteriorate leading to partially ice covered conditions across much of the Des Moines metro and central into southern Iowa with some roads in western and southwest Iowa being reported as completely ice covered. Roads will continue to deteriorate overnight so if you do not need to travel please stay home.

We are continuing to monitor the storm and will post additional updates as needed.
