Flash Flood Watch for Much of Iowa

The National Weather Service offices across the state have issued Flash Flood Watches, which will go into effect at 10:00 p.m. tonight and remain until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

A mesoscale convective system with associated showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop over the area tonight. Heavy rain is expected with this system, with rainfall amounts of 1-3″ likely. Many soils across the warned area are already saturated, with small creeks, streams, and rivers already high. This will not help matters, with only a couple inches needed for flooding to occur.

Low-lying areas should be on extra lookout for potential flooding. This watch is during the night hours, making it extra hazardous… so it would be a good idea to have a NOAA Weather Radio or other form of alerting source on tonight in the case that warnings are issued. Remember, turn around, don’t drown.
