The Easy Bake Oven Coming Up

TURNING ON THE OVEN: Enjoy the comfortable readings today because it’s going to get a lot warmer and more humid as well heading toward the end of the week and into the weekend. There will be plenty of sunshine across the state with a few clouds here and there during the afternoon. Highs will range from the middle 70s in our northeastern counties to the middle 80s in the western counties. Dew points will be a bit higher today than they were yesterday but will still be in the comfortable category for most of us. A disturbance will move through the state late tonight into Thursday with a chance of some showers and storms. These will be hit and miss and some places may get by with little or no precipitation. This will be occurring on the nose of much warmer air that is coming in from the west and southwest. Thursday we may see readings well into the 90s in the southwestern half of the state with the northeastern half seeing some 80s. Friday and Saturday look to feature upper 80s through the middle 90s for highs with heat indices likely exceeding 100 in many places. It looks like summer is arriving in Iowa for sure now.

STORM CHANCES: The GFS is continuing to show a possible backdoor cold front in our eastern counties which may cool readings there down into the upper 70s and lower 80s while the rest of the state looks to continue to see highs close to or over 90. The chances of showers and storms also look to increase as we look at Sunday and into the beginning of next week with a system approaching from the west. There looks to be some dry time mixed in as well. It’s too early to determine any chances of strong to severe storms either. The chances of precipitation will move off to our east on Tuesday of next week.

OVER THE HILL AND FURTHER OUT: Looking further into next week and into the extended period, high pressure will move in the middle of next week and by the end of next week, the winds look to be back out of the south and temperatures look to climb back into the 80s and lower 90s with higher humidity once more. Further along, a ridge is shown to set up across the plains. This looks to bring very hot weather to that area with readings possibly in the triple digits. The main storm track is shown to be just north of the state but close enough where we may see some MCS activity during the overnight hours with several systems passing the area. Not too confident in this setup but it’s something that will be watched in coming model runs.
