More Thunderstorms Today with Severe Chances

A look at the radar early this morning shows several areas of showers and thunderstorms moving through the region. This activity will continue moving to the northeast at about 30-40 MPH. For more information, please read our latest short term forecast.

Wednesday

0212

A messy severe weather situation will arise once again for Wednesday with a multitude of wild cards at play, namely being how storms this morning play out with the forecast. If rain or cloud cover lasts too long, peak heating could be effected and therefore reduce our instability.

If things work out correctly, a weak cold front is expected to set the stage later today across the Plains. Storms in these areas should move out this morning and allow destabilization to occur, alongside steep lapse rates. Strong mid-level southwesterlies with modest instability and plenty of moisture will allow organized supercells to develop and pose a threat for large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado or two. For this reason, the SPC has much of Iowa outlined under an elevated risk of severe weather for today.

Storms will weaken during the evening hours as they move east into a more stable environment.

Thursday

0213

Another round of severe thunderstorms is possible Thursday with a somewhat messy forecast at hand with yet another system moving through the region during the morning hours.

Storms are expected to re-develop to the west across Colorado and the Plains in a more favorable environment. All modes of severe weather are possible in that area with veering winds aloft bringing a tornado threat into play. These storms will push east and continue being strong-to-severe thanks to a strengthening low-level jet overnight. Large hail and damaging winds will be the primary threats as they enter the state.

Additional activity is possible Friday and Saturday. Details will be given as we get closer.
