Look, More Severe Weather Possible Today

The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe weather for this afternoon and early evening across the southern and southeastern counties of the state. The main threats from these possible severe storms would be from large hail and damaging straight line winds.

A cold front will be sweeping into the state from the northwest today. Ahead of this front temperatures are expected to get into the 60s and lower 70s. There is enough unstable air that thunderstorms are likely to develop during the afternoon hours along the cold front. These will quickly move out of the state and or begin to dissipate close to sunset as the diabetic (aka daytime) heating ceases. Models are indicating some decent instability but nothing compared to earlier events over the last few weeks. The main window for the storms looks to be between 2pm and 9pm this evening over the risk area.

There will be no risk of any flooding from any of these storms as they are likely to be moving at a decent pace to the east and southeast. However, some rainfall amounts of a half inch or more could be possible.

Much cooler air will move in later tonight and some frost is possible in the far northern counties of the state Saturday morning (if skies can clear) and again Sunday morning over a larger section of the state. The below average temperatures look to continue through the middle of next week.
