Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Western Iowa until 10:00 PM

The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Adair, Adams, Audubon, Buena Vista, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Cherokee, Clay, Crawford, Dickinson, Emmet, Fremont, Greene, Guthrie, Harrison, Ida, Lyon, Mills, Monona, Montgomery, O’Brien, Osceola, Page, Palo Alto, Plymouth, Pocahontas, Pottawattamie, Sac, Shelby, Sioux, Taylor, and Woodbury Counties until 10:00 PM tonight.

Primary Threats Include:

  • Widespread Large Hail Likely with Isolated Very Large Hail Events to 2.5″ in Diameter Possible
  • Scattered Damaging Winds Likely with Isolated Significant Gusts to 75 MPH Possible
  • A Tornado or Two Possible

Summary: A broken band or two of strong-to-severe thunderstorms will move from eastern Nebraska into western Iowa and northwest Missouri later today, with additional storms forming in the wake of these across south-central Nebraska. Other storms should form/strengthen northward from northeast Nebraska into southeast South Dakota and southwest Minnesota. Some of the activity, especially in Nebraska and western Iowa, will be capable of large hail, damaging winds, and possibly a tornado or two through early tonight.

Remember, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.
