Marginal Risk of Severe Weather Today and Tomorrow

The overcast and rainy conditions that we have seen over the last several days will continue into the early part of the week with isolated severe weather chances today and tomorrow.

0118

DENSE FOG ADVISORY: A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for most of the state through 10:00 a.m. this morning. Expect patchy fog with reduced visibilities through mid-morning. Be careful if you must be out driving.

MARGINAL RISK TODAY: Decent southerly flow will pool moisture northward into the area today, and when combined with a strong 60-70+ knot mid-level jet this evening, widespread and scattered showers and thunderstorms can be anticipated to develop. This will likely occur in the late evening. There will be some instability in the southwestern part of the state, however with things being after sunset, the overall threat will be rather low…at best. There is a marginal risk of severe weather for the southwest quarter for this purpose. In any case, it would be a good idea to have your NOAA Weather Radio on. The primary threat with any isolated severe cell that may develop will be large hail.

ELEVATED RISK TOMORROW: Low-level moisture again will be seen Tuesday as dew points hop into the 50s across the region. While a lot of uncertainty exists, potentially several discrete cells or linear areas should begin developing in eastern Iowa and Illinois sometime in the afternoon thanks to the aforementioned moisture, instability, moderate buoyancy, and other variables. All threats of severe weather will be possible with this, including large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado. The worst of this activity will be farther east across Illinois, but those in the east should be on a look out, especially in the far east central. With initiation occurring here also, the tornado threat may somewhat peak here as well. The Storm Prediction Center has posted an elevated risk of severe weather for the far east central, including the Quad Cities metro and Clinton. A marginal risk exists west of that for essentially the eastern one-fourth of the state.
