The Last Vestiges of Winter?

No Video Today

WARMTH ON THE WAY: Another system will be moving through the northeastern counties of the state later today into tonight. This will bring a chance of some rain and snow to those areas. This doesn’t look to amount to a lot with only a dusting of snow at most and a few hundredths of an inch of rain possible. Highs will be in the 30s northeast to the lower 50s southwest. Saturday will be similar in temperatures but there’ll be more sunshine around. Sunday will bring an increase in cloudiness but also warmer temperatures as 60s will be returning to a large portion of southern Iowa with the rest of the state seeing upper 40s and 50s. Another system will be coming in late Sunday through Monday and Tuesday with a chance of some showers and thunderstorms. SPC has been indicating that some of the storms could become strong Monday. We’ll keep watching this in the coming days for any changes. The warmth looks to continue Monday and Tuesday even with the chance of rain around.

QUIET AND MILD: The rest of next week looks to be fairly quiet with a lot of the active weather staying to our south and west of the area. Temperatures will cool back into the 40s and 50s for most of us with partly to mostly sunny skies around. The next chance of precipitation looks to come late Friday into next Saturday across the southern and southeastern counties of the state. We’ll keep tabs on that in the coming days as well.

EXTENDED PERIOD: As we look at what the GFS is showing us in the extended period, the model has a few systems moving through the area around the middle of the month with chances of precipitation. The last one, around the 16th looks to bring colder air back into the state through the end of the period. Otherwise most of the period looks mild with temperatures averaging a bit above the seasonal level for the middle of March. Given the next two weeks shows little if any wintry weather (outside late tonight), don’t be putting away the winter clothes quite yet.
