The Temperature Incline

GET OUTSIDE: Temperatures will be heading up today and especially on Saturday as winds turn out of the west and southwest. Skies will be mostly sunny today and on Saturday. Highs today will be from the upper 30s north and northeast to the lower 50s southwest. Saturday will be in the 50s to lower and middle 60s. It will be somewhat breezy on Saturday so be aware of that. As we look at Sunday a disturbance will be moving through that may kick off some precipitation (likely rain with possibly rain snow mix at night). The chances don’t look all that great with a lack of moisture with the storm. We’ll watch it, but it doesn’t look to be an issue. Sunday’s readings will be a few degrees cooler than on Saturday with 40s north and 50s to near 60 south.

THE ROARING LION STORM: March is looking to roar in with a storm system coming in Tuesday into Wednesday. This will be some significant precipitation to the state. What we don’t know quite yet is what the primary precipitation type is going to be. It will all depend on the placement of a warm front over the state. North of the front, the precipitation will likely be snow or a wintry mix changing to snow. South of the front, the precipitation would be rain and perhaps even a thunderstorm, with the precipitation changing to snow later Tuesday night. At this time we can’t really place where this is going to set up, this model run is indicating somewhere around US 20, but any deviation north or south will greatly change the forecast for a particular location. Stay tuned for any changes regarding this system this weekend.

MARCHING ALONG: The rest of next week will depend on what we receive from the storm Tuesday into Wednesday. If we get snow and perhaps a lot of it, we may see some much colder readings through Friday, but if we don’t get as much snow or none at all (which could be possible in southern Iowa), we could see seasonal readings. Right now, we’re leading more toward the colder readings at this time. Another system is shown moving into the state late Friday and into the following weekend with more precipitation. This will be another system to watch. Looking into the extended period, the colder temperatures are shown to last through the first week of the month before we see several systems move through that may bring some brief warmer spells intermixed with cooler readings. Of course this is just model data and not a true forecast, at least not yet.
