A BRIEF PAUSE: A little snow perhaps mixed with some rain and drizzle will be moving through the state this morning into the afternoon. Most of the precipitation should be ending during the morning hours west of I-35 and into the afternoon east of there. Any accumulations of snow will be light (under an inch). Some slightly cooler air will follow as we head into Wednesday before a warming trend begins. Highs today and Wednesday will generally be in the upper 20s north and northeast to near 40 in the south and southwest.
THAW TIME: Warmer weather is on the way and most of that snow on the ground will be melting quickly as we finish the week and head into the weekend. Sunshine will be around outside a slight chance of some rain on Friday with a disturbance moving through. Highs Thursday and Friday will make into the 40s and 50s in most areas with parts of southwest Iowa possibly getting into the lower 60s. Following the passage of the disturbance on Friday, temperatures will drop off to the 30s and 40s for the weekend but still comfortable enough to be outside for any length of time. Another system is seen coming into the state next Tuesday and Wednesday with a chance of some precipitation (most likely snow). We have lots of time to watch this over the coming days.
CONTINUING ON: As we look into the extended period which takes us into the month of March, the weather pattern looks fairly similar throughout the period with a trough over the east and a ridge over the west. This looks to put the state in a northwesterly flow once again which would keep readings slightly below seasonal levels during the period. The GFS has a system moving through around the 28th and 29th with a chance of some precipitation at that time with cooler air following in its wake. Depending on where the trough sets up and how far west it comes will highly vary what weather we may see during this period, so right now it’s still up in the air.
