Want More Snow? Good More On The Way

LITTLE MORE SNOW, BITTER COLD: We will see a brief break from the snow chances today with partly to mostly cloudy skies across the state. Highs today will be in the teens and 20s. The snow chances return late tonight into the first half of Friday with a system that will quickly move across the state from the northwest. Snowfall accumulations with this system look to range from a dusting to an inch or two. This should not cause too many travel issues at this time. What this system will also bring is much colder air Friday night into Saturday with lows dropping well below zero for a large section of the state and some areas in the northern counties may get down into the -10s by Saturday morning.

LOVE STORM: Another system looks to drop in late Saturday into Sunday with a chance of some snow. This storm looks a more vigorous than the previous ones with some decent snowfall amounts possible. It’s still a bit early to determine actual amounts at this time, but some model runs suggest several inches of snow could be possible with the system. We’ll continue to monitor and fine tune this as we get closer to the weekend. Readings will bounce back into the teens and 20s for highs on Sunday with similar readings seen Monday as well.

TEMPERATURE LINES: Battle lines look to be drawn as we head into next week with warmer air trying to come in from the south and west. However the GFS continues to indicate the main flow coming out of the northwest keeping a few disturbances moving through the area Tuesday and again on Wednesday. These will likely move between the cold air that will be slowly retreating to our north and east and the warmer air to our south and west. I’m not too confident in where these disturbances may move with relation to where the cold and warm air masses will be 5 days out. According to this run of the GFS, temperatures may vary from northeast to southwest perhaps as much as 20-25°. We should be able to get a better handle on this in the coming days.

FEBRUARY FORWARD: Looking ahead toward most of the rest of February, a system is shown moving through the state toward the end of next week with a slight chance of some precipitation with it. It will drop readings back down to the 20s and lower 30s from readings much warmer than that earlier. The rest of the period looks rather quiet with many systems missing the state to the north and south. The model also shows temperatures possibly heading back below seasonal levels toward the end of the period after several days of seasonal readings.
