Midday Update: Don’t Drive in Northern Iowa

Travel is still not recommended for a large portion of central into northwest Iowa. Some roads are impassible just north of Ames at this time. This only mentions state or US Highways though. This does not mean that every county roads is safe to drive on. There may be many of those that are impassible as well. Further to the south and east, blowing snow is causing some travel difficulties but people are able to get around with some effort. Winds will continue to be strong out of the northwest the rest of the day. At noon, winds were sustained at 15-25mph with gusts to over 45 mph in some areas. This will continue to cause ground blizzard conditions even if no new snow is falling.

With regards to the new snow that has fallen, amounts have generally be light as was expected with this system. Any snow will continue through the rest of the day into this evening, but will be less than a half inch at best (good luck measuring this with all the wind).
