DAYBREAK UPDATE: Travel Not Advised across much of Northern Iowa

The latest look at road conditions this morning show that travel continues to not be advised across much of north central into northwestern Iowa. This includes Interstate 35 between mile marker 128 and the Iowa/Minnesota border. Several reports of whiteout conditions have been reported in this area and travel along these roads will be extremely dangerous to impossible. PLEASE DO NOT TRAVEL IN THESE AREAS THIS MORNING UNLESS IT’S AN EMERGENCY!

If you must travel, please bring a winter survival kit along with you. Several accidents have been coming and going since the early, early morning hours, and this will likely only get worse as we go through the early morning commute. Tow bans have been posted for 15 counties of the state, including Winnebago, Hancock, Cerro Gordo, Worth, Floyd, Mitchell, Howard, Chickasaw, Franklin, Hamilton, Wright, Boone, Pottawattamie, Cass, and Adair.

Light-to-moderate snow will continue through this morning. Winds have been sustained in the 25 to 35 MPH range across much of the state with gusts to 50 MPH at times. This will lead to easy blowing snow and drifting, and lead to whiteout conditions. In addition, this long term high wind will break the leftover snowpack up, and cause some of that to blow around as well.

Blizzard Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect throughout the area, in the west until noon and until 6:00 p.m. this evening in the east. Either way… expect dangerous travel over the next several hours. Schools and businesses are closing throughout north Iowa today. Stay home and be safe if you’re within this area.
