If You Hate Cold and Snow, You Won’t Like This Forecast

No Video Today Due to Storm

COLD HERE TO STAY: The year is going to end with cold and more typical temperatures across the state. After the storm that brought sleet, freezing rain and several inches of snow, temperatures will be in the 20s to lower 30s today. There will be some lingering snow showers or flurries in our northern counties that will quickly move to the northeast by the afternoon hours. Skies will remain cloudy for the entire day. Another system quickly moves through on Wednesday but this should only bring a few light snow showers to the state and minor accumulations of an inch or less. The year ends on Thursday with highs in the upper teens through the 20s and as people head out to ring in the New Year, readings will be dropping through the teens and into the single digits by dawn Friday.

QUIET NEW YEAR: The first couple of days of the New Year look fairly quiet with seasonal temperatures in the 20s to around 30 and quite a bit of sunshine. There will be some Pacific air that tries to make inroads into the state but the snow cover we have currently is going to keep the temperatures pretty much near seasonal. The GFS shows no activity until the middle of next week (in the extended period) where a system may come in from the west and bring some snow at that time along with a shot or Arctic air as well.

FURTHER ALONG: The GFS shows the flow coming straight from the north pole as we head into the second week of the New Year with below average temperatures possible. A system is shown dropping in from the northwest toward the end of the forecast (13th) with a chance of some snow at that time with a possible reinforcement of the cold air continuing thereafter. So in other words, it’s going to stay cold and the snow and sleet that fell isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

ROSE BOWL: For those that are getting away from the cold and snow that we’ve gotten over the last few days, the weather in southern California looks great for the days leading up to and through the bowl game in Pasadena. Skies will be Sunny throughout with only a few clouds from time to time. It will be a bit breezy later in the week with winds of 10-20mph with some higher gusts. Today the highs will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s, with low to mid 60s Wednesday through Friday. Lows will be in the lower to middle 40s, cooler in the mountains and San Fernando Valley. For those wanting to hit the ocean, the water temperature is around 60 (at Santa Monica). Wave heights are forecast to be 1-3ft out of the west with them dropping to 1 foot through Friday.
