FAIRLY QUIET WEEK AHEAD: We’ll see a bit of rain and or snow mix across our northern counties today while the rest of the state will see mainly cloudy skies. We can’t rule out any precipitation elsewhere in the state but the best chances will across the northern two tiers of counties. Highs today will occur around midday for most of us (30s and 40s) with falling temperatures as colder air moves in from the northwest during the afternoon hours. Upper 20s to middle 30s will be commonplace on Thursday with the clouds hanging tough across the state. We could see some clearing in our southern and western counties which will spread to the rest of the state on Friday and Saturday. Speaking of Saturday, winds will be out of the southwest again and this should boost readings into the 40s for parts of the state. This will be ahead of a weak system that will graze the state Sunday with a very isolated chance of rain or snow. Better chances look to be east of the state at this time. Main story as mentioned yesterday will continue to be the river flooding on going across the state. Many rivers will be in flood or remain high through the rest of this week and into the weekend.
YULETIDE TIME: Going into next week, Monday and Tuesday look to remain rather quiet as well with readings in the 30s for the most part. There will be a storm system beginning to take shape off to our west and southwest early next week. This looks to move in late Tuesday into Wednesday with a chance of rain and snow. The run has the low pressure center a little further to the east which would indicate the precipitation amounts may be a bit lighter than what we said yesterday, however this also means more cold air will be involved and that more of the precipitation could be in the form of that white stuff. For those that want to have a white Christmas, this looks to be the only opportunity we may get to see any snow for a large portion of the state. (Some places have a little currently especially western and NW Iowa). We’ll keep tracking this storm and any slight deviations it makes over the next few days. Just beyond the main seven day period on Christmas Eve, we could see some light snow or flurry activity as the storm departs to the northeast with high temperatures roughly in the 20s to lower 30s. Christmas Day will be a bit warmer with temperatures possibly in the 30s with partly cloudy skies.
PASS THE EGG NOG: As we look past the Christmas holiday, another storm looks to move across the state on the 26th and 27th with another chance of rain and snow. Cooler and more seasonal temperatures look to follow in the wake of this system. Another weak system is seen moving across the state on the 30th with a slight chance of snow at that time. New Year’s Eve is shown to be seasonally cool with perhaps a flurry around but nothing major.
