1:00 AM Update: Snow Continuing in Eastern Iowa

Snow is continuing across the state, primarily east of Interstate 35. The two areas of heavier snow continue to exist from Ames to Waterloo and from Clinton to Freeport IL to Madison WI. Snowfall rates of an half inch to an inch per hour can be expected in these areas, potentially higher locally. Snow will likely clear the area by noon at the latest and leave behind cooler temperatures today.

Roads continue to be mostly-to-completely covered with snow or ice for the vast majority of the state. Western Iowa and parts of southern Iowa should begin to clear up this morning as the snow has ended in those areas. Travel is not advised across the Des Moines and Waterloo metros (as well as Waverly, Hampton, Iowa Falls, Mason City, etc). With snow continuing in eastern Iowa through the morning hours… the early morning commute today will be impacted. Please take extra time on the roads if you must travel.

Tow bans remain in effect for many areas along Interstate 35 and 80. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more in eastern Iowa by morning, with western Iowa hopefully being cleared soon.

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories remain for much of the state. These will expire at 6:00 a.m. for the central part of the state at noon for the eastern part of the state. Up to 12″ is expected with 10-15 MPH winds.
