Morning Update: Storm on the Way

A look on the radar shows snow already forming across much of the region in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa. The vast majority of this snow is not reaching the ground, however, as indicated by the airport observations in northwest Iowa – Sheldon, Le Mars, Storm Lake and Sioux City are the only METAR stations reporting light snow. There is a band of moderate-to-heavy snow extending from Parkston, South Dakota to Sac City, Iowa – and this is where we will likely see snowfall accumulations already early this morning.

Snow is expected to gradually become more widespread throughout the day, and as jet streams kick in, product several moderate-to-heavy portions. The evening commute will be affected, and you should take it slow on the roads when you head home, especially around the Des Moines metro area.

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for most areas north and along of Interstate 80, with a Winter Weather Advisory to the south of that.

Our thoughts on snowfall totals have not changed, and we will not be updating these this morning. Eight-to-ten inches are still expected on a line from Davenport to Fort Dodge to Dubuque, potentially farther west, depending on conditions. We will be monitoring and make adjustments as needed.
