Iowa Weather Report August 6th 2015: Strong Chance of Something Happening Somewhere in Iowa

RAIN OR NOT: There will be chances of showers and storms through the weekend, but some areas of the state may not get much or any rain at all. A storm system will be moving into the northwestern counties of the state later this afternoon into tonight. Some stronger storms are possible with this system as it moves in. These storms will gradually weaken as they move to the east and southeast. Another round of storms is possible during the overnight hours Friday night into the first half of Saturday as well. Again as with the storms this afternoon, they will weaken as they move to the east. The question is, do they weaken enough to bring some measurable precipitation to the eastern counties of the state or not. The western counties will see both chances and may get a decent amount of rain with both rounds, but it’s the eastern and northeastern counties of the state that really need the rain at this point. They’ve been running several inches below seasonal levels since the 1st of July. We’ll keep tabs on it as we move forward. Highs today through the weekend will be in the 80s with nighttime readings in the 60s.

INTO NEXT WEEK: Some cooler and drier air will move into the area as we head into Monday and Tuesday next week with some sunshine around and readings in the 70s to lower 80s for highs. Wednesday will be dry as well with readings in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Another system will approach the state by next Thursday and this could bring more precipitation to the area at that time.

FORWARD LOOKING: Looking through the rest of the model run, warmer air is shown to move in toward the end of next week with another system approaching by the weekend (15th and 16) with some shower and thunderstorm chances. There are a few more storm chances in the extended period as well around the 18th and 19th. Temperatures look to stay near or slightly below seasonal levels as a lot of the warmer air is suppressed to the south of the state with the main storm track looking to stay close by. Of course this may change and we’ll watch for any changes and or trends in the coming days.
