Hot and mugginess will be the words to describe the first day of the state baseball tournament, featuring the two Class 1A quarterfinal games, starting with #1 Newman Catholic (36-4) vs #8 Gladbrook-Reinbeck (17-11) at 5:00 p.m. and #4 Martensdale-St. Marys (33-5) vs #5 Coon Rapids-Bayard (29-6) at 7:30 p.m. By the time the first game rolls around, the heat will be peaking for the day in the low 90s with a heat index over 100°. If any pluses, there will be a light breeze also peaking right around this time at 7-14 MPH. Things will cool down somewhat by evening, however the hot weather feeling will remain.
