IT’S RAINING LOTS: There is going to be a lot of rain over the next several days across the state. Some of the rainfall amounts will be quite heavy. We have already seen decent rainfall amounts over southern Iowa last evening and more of that is on the way today and again this weekend as well. Today will be a wet one across the state with several rounds of showers and thunderstorms possible. These are likely to occur about any time during the day. Some of the storms could become strong to severe later this afternoon into tonight but this will all depend on what occurs earlier in the day. If we see a lot of rain and clouds around, the severe weather chances will be a lot lower. If we see a break in the activity and get some peeks of sunshine here and there, the severe weather chances will be higher. Nevertheless the main risks with any storms that could fire would be large hail and damaging winds. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out either. Heavy rain will be a threat as well with totals of 1-2 inches possible with isolated heavier totals. Highs today will be wide ranging from the upper 60s and lower 70s in the far northern counties to the middle and upper 80s in the far southern counties. Far southeast Iowa may hit 90. The rain will slacken off early on Friday, although we can’t rule out our eastern counties still seeing some rain through the mid-morning hours at least. Otherwise skies will be partly to mostly cloudy with the best chances of seeing sunshine the farther west you are. Highs on Friday will be in the 70s to lower 80s.
WEEKEND WETNESS: More shower and thunderstorm chances move back into the state on Saturday and will last through Sunday. The rainfall will not be as heavy as the amounts we could receive later on today, but at least a half to one inch is possible in some areas. This could create some flooding issues in areas that receive a lot of rain later on today so be aware of that. The chances of severe weather this weekend look low at this time, but we’ll watch for any changes to that.
IF YOU LIKE RAIN…: As we head into the new work week, the weather pattern doesn’t change a whole lot with more chances of showers and thunderstorms possible. There will be a break in the action Tuesday into the first half of Wednesday except the far southern counties may still have a chance of rain during that period. The rest of the state gets in on more rain late Wednesday into Thursday with another system moving in from the west. It’s too early to determine rainfall amounts or possible severe weather, but we’ll watch that as it draws closer. Readings will be in the 70s to lower 80s for the most part.
SOMEWHERE OVER THE HILL: As we look further into the month of June, another system looks to move in the weekend of the 20th and 21st with more showers and thunderstorms possible. Temperatures will be above seasonal levels ahead of the system with readings dropping back close to seasonal levels after the frontal passage. The wet weather pattern looks to continue through the end of the period with several chances of showers and storms during the period, but the timing is still up in the air as it’s still more than a week out at this point.
