After a large line of showers and thunderstorms moved through the state and produced damaging wind damage across central Iowa, we are gearing up for one more day of strong-to-severe thunderstorms in the state, primarily geared across southeastern Iowa. Showers and thunderstorms continue to trek eastward this morning across east central Iowa and western Illinois and will likely pose a threat for lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds. This should be east of the state by mid-morning and allow for peak heating to occur. Some of these storms may train westward and also pose a concern for flash flooding. Nonetheless, eastern Iowa will likely wake up this morning and see a good couple of inches in their rain gauges at least.
On to the storms set to impact the state later tonight. There is still a lot of uncertainty with how storms from this morning affect things later this afternoon as cloudy/stormy skies can hamper a risk very easily. The current expectation is that things clear out by mid-morning and allow for clearing for the majority of the late morning and early afternoon hours. This should allow temperatures to heat up into the 80s across southern Iowa and dew points nearly 70° in many places, allowing for ample instability to enter the region. A warm 30-45 MPH southwest flow should also begin to pump up into the state, cooking up some decent shear as well. Again, this all revolves around whether things are able to productively destabalize this afternoon.
An early look at models this morning do not have any reasonable agreement between any of them, so things will have to be monitored and updated as we get closer to this afternoon. The current plan would be for isolated, discrete cells to form across southeast Iowa with all modes of severe weather possible before propagating east as a squall line and have a primary damaging wind threat as we saw today. A lot of this will still have to be sorted out and it would definitely be a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast this afternoon.
