Iowa Weather Report May 18th 2015: Cool Days and Nights

No Video Today

COOLER WEEK: It will be noticeably cooler across the state this week with readings below seasonal levels for the middle to end of May. Highs today will be in the 50s north to the lower 70s southeast. There will be more clouds across the northern counties that will help to keep the temperatures lower there while some partly to mostly sunny skies will be found elsewhere. The cooler temperatures will last through mid-week with some light frost possible in our northern counties especially Tuesday morning where some upper 30s could be possible. A weak system will move into the state at mid-week and may bring a chance of a few showers to the state on Wednesday. It doesn’t look to be a big deal at this time with most places getting a quarter inch or less from this system. Toward the end of the week temperatures will be back into the 60s and 70s across the state ahead of the next storm system that looks to move in during the upcoming holiday weekend.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Another storm system will threaten the state on another weekend. This one could bring the chances of showers and thunderstorms to the state beginning on Saturday and lasting perhaps into the first half of Monday. This will not be all day rain chances and we may even see some dry time with some sunshine here and there. Temperatures are expected to be back into the 70s for the most part, however if we see more cloudiness and rain activity during the daylight hours, the temperatures may get held back into the 60s. We’ll have to wait and see on which it will be. Don’t cancel any outdoor plans by any means.

LOOKING TOWARD JUNE: As we look into the extended period which takes us into the month of June, some dry and seasonal weather is forecast by the model after Memorial Day Weekend. The GFS also shows a few systems moving through the area. One on the 29th of May and another on the 1st of June. We don’t see anything abnormal at this time. Abnormal meaning, no big heat wave and cool downs in the next two weeks, but as always things can change from run to run.
