Iowa Weather Report April 15th 2015: Doldrums of April

SHOWER CHANCES: A slow moving storm system will be moving into the Plains and will be slow to move out through the rest of the week and into the upcoming weekend. This will bring several chances of showers and thunderstorms to the area, however most places will remain dry to start out as the best chances of seeing any precipitation will be across the western and southern counties of the state today and tomorrow before overspreading the area as we head into the weekend. Readings today will be in the 60s with cooler temperatures over the southern counties where clouds will be around. There will be some sunshine that will peak through over the northern counties and that should help boost readings there in the middle and perhaps upper 60s. The rain chances will stick around for the weekend before a cold front moves in on Sunday taking the precipitation out to the east and bringing colder temperatures for the start of the new work week.

NEXT WEEK COOLDOWN: Temperatures will tumble into the 50s and perhaps even some 40s across the state as we move into the early part of next week. A disturbance rotating around the base of an upper level feature to our north may bring some precipitation to the state Tuesday into early next Wednesday. Most of this will fall in the form of rain, however Tuesday night some of the precipitation may mix with some sleet or wet snow, however we’ll need a few more days to fine tune this forecast as timing and temperatures may still be off at this point.

TOWARD THE END: The GFS shows the cold air sticking around through at least the 25th or 26th before temperatures rebound back to near or perhaps above seasonal levels. The weather pattern looks to get more active toward the end of the month with more chances of precipitation at that time. Timing these this far out is rather fruitless at this point, however we’ll keep a watchful eye out for anything in the coming days.
