A look at the radar this evening shows a large band of precipitation hovering over most of the state with a variety of precipitation types. A note that our P-typing algorithms are not completely correct as several area airports are reporting differently. Most of those in the southern half of the state should be to transition to a sleet/rain mix this evening with those in the north having just about everything. The red icons on the map indicate freezing, the orange icons indicate unknown (typically a mix or sleet), the greens indicate rain, and blue indicate snow. Mason City, Estherville, Spencer, and Waterloo are the only sites reporting freezing rain, and Clarion and Iowa Falls the only sites reporting snow. Most other locations are seeing a mix or rain only. We’ll keep monitoring and provide updates as we get them.
