Iowa Weather Report March 6th 2015: Upward Bound

WARMING ON UP TO THE SPRING SIDE: Not too take too much out of the Jefferson’s Theme Song, but we’re finally moving the temperatures on up to seasonal levels and even above them as we head into early next week. We finally got a piece of spring that we’ve been waiting for. Highs today across the state will be in the 30s east to the lower 50s out west where the snowpack will deplete extensively there. There will be plenty of sunshine around. Same story goes for the weekend as well with partly to mostly sunny skies around and readings in the upper 30s northeast to the middle 50s southwest. There is a disturbance that may kick off a flurry or snow shower in the far northern and northeastern counties Saturday night but that doesn’t look to be a big deal at this point. The GFS doesn’t show it as well as previous runs. Looking into next week, readings will get into the 50s and lower 60s across the state (except the far northern and northeastern counties may stick to the upper 40s due to more snow on the ground there that will still be melting). There will still be plenty of sunshine around as the weather pattern becomes calmer across the area.

EXTENDED PERIOD: As we look into the middle of March and beyond, the warmer than average temperatures look to continue for a while. The GFS has a system that may skirt the state to the southeast around the middle of the month that could bring some light precipitation to the state. Another system around the 19th could bring the colder weather back to the state at that time along with some precipitation. It’s too early to determine whether or not this will bring readings back below seasonal levels but we’ll keep a watch on that in the coming days.
