Morning Look at System Later Tonight into Tuesday

It is still a very complex situation with regards to the system coming in later tonight into Tuesday. Precipitation should move in during the evening and late night hours mainly as snow with temperatures rising slowly toward the freezing mark. The precipitation will begin to change to freezing rain and sleet during the early morning hours over the southern counties of the state and move into the central counties by sunrise. We should see all rain over the southern counties by mid-morning and perhaps the I-80 corridor around late morning and US 30 around Noon. The precipitation will likely remain as snow over the northwestern counties of the state and the northeastern counties may see snow longest before changing over to sleet and some freezing rain.

There has been a trend for the amounts to be lighter than what has been seen over the last few days. Current thinking suggests that any ice accretion will be a tenth of an inch or less. Snow amounts are likely to be 1-3″ with some isolated heavier totals. Colder air will move into the state by the afternoon hours with another system that is coming in from the northwest, however as this system moves through, most of the moisture from the first system will be moving out of the state so any snowfall from the second system will be relatively minor. However, winds will be on the increase and this will create some blowing and drifting snow especially in the northern and northwestern counties of the state. We may see some whiteouts in some areas.

Currently, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the northeastern counties of the state from 3am Tuesday until 9pm Tuesday. Other headlines may get issued later on today, stay tuned.
