Early Afternoon Update: Road Conditions/ Changes to Warnings, Advisories

The National Weather Service in Des Moines has trimmed their warnings and advisories from the southwestern counties due to warmer air that is leading to more rain than snow in these areas. The Des Moines area is now under a Winter Weather Advisory instead of a Winter Storm Warning for snow amounts that will be less than first forecast earlier. The heaviest snow will likely still be in the warned area from north central Iowa through central into EC and southeast Iowa. A few places have already received up to 5 inches and more is expected.

Road Conditions are still partly to completely covered over the northern half of the state. These conditions will continue to be hazardous in these areas throughout the rest of the afternoon into this evening. The far southern counties may not see much hazardous travel, however with the rain that is falling in those areas, some possible freezing is expected tonight as temperatures drop. Tow bans are in effect in Iowa and Poweshiek counties this afternoon, so if you are out and about in these areas and get stuck, you are on your own. Travel wisely and take it slow if you are going to be travelling today into tonight.
