COLD TIMES: Temperatures will be well below seasonal levels for at least a week or more looking at this GFS model run. The first batch of cold air is arriving today as readings will be steady or slowly falling through the day. Readings in the 20s and 30s will be likely across the state during the morning hours before falling to the single digits tonight. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy across the state. There will be several reinforcing shots of arctic air as we move through the week. With each reinforcing shot of cold air will come a chance of some light snow or flurries. These disturbances look to move in Friday into Friday night, Saturday, Sunday afternoon and Monday evening into Tuesday morning. Sunday morning could be quite chilly with readings well below zero for a good portion of the state. Northeastern Iowa may see readings down into the -10s for lows at that time. A system will just miss the state to the south early next week that could bring some hazardous weather across the middle Mississippi River Valley and the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys northeastward into the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Any shift northward could bring some precipitation into the state at that point.

TOWARD THE END OF FEBRUARY: As we look toward the end of the month, the weather pattern doesn’t look to change a whole lot, with cold temperatures still looking to rule the area. This run shows a few systems that may impact the area with some precipitation but timing and track of these systems is still up in the air at this point. The only trend we see in the extended period is the below average temperatures looking to continue for a while. Spring is only 37 days away.
