Iowa Weather Report January 26th 2015: Somewhat Quiet

THE WEEK AHEAD: It will be a divided state today with clouds and a few snowflakes possible in the far eastern counties of the state while the western counties will see partly to mostly sunny skies and readings well into the 50s and perhaps even a few 60s as well. The eastern counties where there will be more clouds will be stuck in the 30s and 40s today. As we head into Tuesday and Wednesday, warmer air will flood into the rest of the state with 40s and 50s possible across the state. The coolest readings will still remain over the northeastern counties of the state. A cold front will drop in from the northwest Wednesday night and Thursday with a chance of some precipitation at that time, albeit a slight chance. It will bring readings back down into the 30s for highs on Thursday into Friday. Another system on Saturday will reinforce the colder air for the rest of the weekend with readings in the 20s and 30s at that time.

LOOKING INTO FEBRUARY: As we look into February, the GFS seems to recycle the pattern all over again with the cold air over the east and the warm air over the west with the state of Iowa in the middle. This would bring wide ranging temperatures once again from west to east across the state. As we look toward the 7th through the 9th, the GFS looks to bring cold air back into the state with some possible snow at that time. We’ll have to see if this trend continues on future model runs, however the GFS has been very inconsistent in the extended period over the last few weeks so confidence remains low.
