Iowa Weather Report January 25th 2015: Cold or Warm

WIDE RANGING: A few more clippers are expected to move close to or through the state over the next couple of days. We will also be seeing some wide ranging temperatures at least through the middle of next week across the state. Today a system will move moving out of the state taking with it some rain/snow mix eastward. Some snow accumulations around an inch or two are possible especially in the northern and northeastern counties of the state. Travel isn’t expected to become hazardous but take your time if you are going to be out and about on Sunday. Highs today will be in the middle to upper 20s northeast to the lower 40s southwest. Skies will be mostly cloudy with the precipitation lasting at least through the early afternoon hours. As we head into Monday through Wednesday we will be seeing quite a contrast in temperatures across the state. On Monday, highs will be in the lower to middle 30s in the northeastern counties to near 60 in the far southwestern counties. Skies will be mostly cloudy northeast to mostly sunny southwest. There is a slight chance of some precipitation in the northeastern counties on Monday with a clipper system that looks to move mainly across Wisconsin. Tuesday and most of Wednesday will be dry across the state, however another clipper will move in that could bring some isolated chances of precipitation to the northeastern counties of the state again at that time. Highs during this period will be in the 30s northeast to the lower and middle 50s in the southwest.

ANOTHER DUMPING OF COLD AIR: As we head toward next weekend, colder air looks to move in with another clipper system. This could bring readings back down below seasonal levels for a time, however looking farther into the extended period, the GFS is showing more warm air around the area that cold arctic air. So confidence past seven days is rather low at this point. The GFS also is showing that the weather will be rather inactive as we head into February but given the flip-flopping with the temperatures, we’re not ready for a call on precipitation either.
