Iowa Weather Report January 14th 2015: Upward Bound

TEMPERATURES RISING: Readings will continue their slow climb up today with highs in 20s across the state under partly to mostly sunny skies. Temperatures will rise into the upper 20s through the 30s on Thursday as warmer air continues to flow into the state. Some parts of southwestern Iowa could see readings in the lower 40s. Readings will continue to warm well into the 30s and 40s on Friday and even Saturday before a cold front late on Saturday looks to drop readings back into the 20s and 30s across the state.

INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK: Readings will remain near seasonal levels on Sunday before warming back up on Monday into the 30s and 40s. A lot will depend on the amount of snow pack still remaining in the area as to how high temperatures may get up to. A cold front will move through on Tuesday that could bring some light precipitation to the state (likely in the form of snow). This will bring temperatures back down once again as we head into the middle of next week.

TOWARD THE END OF JANUARY: Looking at the extended period, the GFS is showing that temperatures will likely average out at or below seasonal levels to start out before a few rounds of arctic air plunge in from the north and northwest. These would bring a few snow chances into the state at that time, something we’ll watch in the coming days.
