Iowa Weather Report January 9th 2015: Cold Air, Keeps On Coming

No Video Today

COLD AIR KEEPS ON COMING: Another bitterly cold day across the state today with readings in the single digits to the lower teens for highs with partly to mostly sunny skies. Some blowing snow is still possible in open areas that may cause some travel difficulties. Readings tonight will drop back below zero once again. However this looks to be coldest night of the next week across the state.

WARMING UP AND STAYING MAINLY DRY: Readings will begin slowly recovering through the weekend and into next week as we near seasonal levels for temperatures by mid-week and perhaps going above that by the end of the week. The only thing that could tamper that is if the cold air currently over the state now is slow to move out. We still have a lot of snow on the ground as well so any warm up will be slow to occur. It will stay mainly dry through the middle of next week with only a slight chance of seeing some precipitation Sunday night across the far southern or southeastern counties of the state. This would likely be in the form of snow, but the best chances of seeing any precipitation looks to be staying just to the south of the state at this time.

LOOKING FORWARD: No real changes in what the GFS is showing from yesterday. Still show the warmer air continuing through next weekend into the beginning of the following week before readings drop back down closer to seasonal levels. The GFS is also showing no real significant storms moving through the area until late in the period when a storm may graze the state to the south. We’ll keep watching for any possible trends in the coming days.
